40 bags in 40 days, Week 4 update

So last week was a disaster, I mentioned that in my last post.

The last week hasn’t been a whole lot better but I did make up for it today and yesterday! Here is what my list currently looks like:

I have one task left that I need to catch up on. Not only did I catch up on everything but one task, I even did a few ahead of time! Maybe the nesting thing is finally kicking in?! And, have we all noticed….I’m more than halfway done with my challenge!

The one task that I just flat out didn’t finish this week was filing all of my paperwork away. I absolutely hate filing all that stuff so I let it pile up for weeks months and then do a huge stack at once. So that’s left on the list. Yes I know this isn’t decluttering as in purging…but it really is. I broke it up into two days so I didn’t get overwhelmed. I don’t always open statements and things so I went through and made sure I got all the junk out, opened everything and re-piled it nicely. So that is still on my to do list — mainly because I’m avoiding it because I just really don’t want to do it. It’s a really big pile…

I did purge an office trash can full of stuff, so I definitely made some progress! And it looks almost organized in the office aka man cave.

But that was my one missed task of the week. I did a bunch today so I’ll highlight my favorite accomplishments!

I cleaned out ALL the cupboards in all three of my bathroom’s today and was able to purge a ton of stuff, so I’m quite proud of that accomplishment. I got rid of a trash bag, between expired medicines, bath products I don’t use anymore and just other stuff that I’ve been hoarding, it felt really good!

Plus I have a small pile of stuff to add to my donation items also. Things I don’t use, things I’ve upgraded, things I somehow have three of, etc. Bonus,all of the cupboards are neatly organized now!

I jumped ahead and already finished Thursday’s task which was getting all of our recycling out, breaking down boxes, clearing up a corner of the garage, so I’m ahead there by a day. Since we are getting so much baby stuff sent to us, I could build a box fort. My cat would love that.

Another item on my list (not for another week!) was to clean out and declutter my email inbox, that’s done. I was bored last night and it seemed like a good idea. Lastly, I also checked up on, as well as organized our finances and budget.

I’m feeling really accomplished now!

So while I am still a little behind I have three days in the next couple weeks that are already taken care of. Small victories people, small victories!

40 bags in 40 days Challenge, Week 2 Update

So Week 2 of my 40 bags in 40 days Challenge has pretty much been a disaster, I’m not going to lie. I started off strong, finishing my Thursday and Friday tasks with ease. Then I fizzled out and skipped Saturday – Monday. Part of this was due to a power outage Saturday but the majority was to my lack of motivation and my desire for napping. I’m a napping champion.

So Tuesday was my catch up day, plus Tuesday’s task, leaving me with four tasks to try and accomplish. Luckily two of my tasks were super easy and I had just done them about two months ago, so I just went through and made sure I didn’t miss anything and re-straightened a few things.

That left me with the laundry room my, biggest task of the week. During this challenge I try and deep clean the area while also doing my decluttering.

My laundry room is mostly just unorganized and needs a good scrubbing. But I can’t really reach or get to most things with the whole belly in the way. So this will definitely need another good cleaning in a couple of months. I got a portion of it done yesterday in moving a few things around. With all the new things I’m storing in there (cleaning and washing products for baby clothes and diapers) it mainly needs some reorganizing.

Yesterday I sprayed for ants, swept and straightened up Athena’s litter box supplies. My laundry room doubles as a litter box and kitty food dish room. Today I’ll finish the laundry room by reorganizing the products I store there and the tops of my washer and dryer which have random stuff all over them. So finishing the laundry room is on today’s list.

Also on the list for today (and I already did it!) was cleaning out my purse. I got it all nice and cleaned out, receipts thrown out or organized and tossed some long dead and empty Chapstick containers.

Today’s task is to clean under by bathroom sink in the downstairs half bath. There shouldn’t be much to purge in there since it’s mostly Bath & Body Works supplies that I’m hoarding. But it could definitely use a quick re-straightening.

Next week is simple since I only have a couple tasks since I will be out of town for most of it, I only scheduled three tasks for next week.

Hopefully once I get back from my trip I’ll do much better than I did this week!

40 bags in 40 days Challenge, Week 1 Update

So last week I posted about the 40 bags in 40 days challenge. I began the challenge last Wednesday have now been through the first week. Check out my original post here.

I have to say even though the areas I’ve chosen to focus on are small, it definitely feels good to decrapify!

Right around the time I discovered we were expecting, I’ve been trying to declutter and clean anyways. Nesting maybe? It’s all been big stuff, like a closet here, a closet there, the garage, etc. Between the incoming arrival of a tiny person and all the STUFF he will need, plus potentially moving at the end of the year, getting rid of stuff has been a priority.

So for this challenge I wanted to focus on really small areas of the house. The FlyLady (check her out if you haven’t) would probably call some of these hot-spots, or areas that seem to attract clutter. Or if it’s a bigger area, or somewhere I feel is a bit daunting, I’ve broken it up into sections. Like I have three days where I want to work on my garage because otherwise it probably won’t get done.

Here’s my list.

Two of my first tasks were to hit the junk drawer in kitchen and a basket we keep on the counter that I’ve been piling random things in. It was ridiculous how much stuff I was able to purge. I had coupons in my junk drawer from Christmas 2013. Oops.

Another daily task was to get rid of all of my recycling since I’d been to lazy to cut down my boxes and get them in the recycle bin. Getting that done actually really cleared up a huge space in my garage so I wasn’t tripping over stuff every time I went out to my truck. On the same day I also cleaned up my backyard a little bit and got some decorations out that were totally rusted and useless. (Hawaiian perk).

My toughest task of these first seven days was my food pantry. Each time my awesome momma comes to visit we she cleans out my pantries and throws away all the expired stuff, reorganizes, etc. Because she’s awesome like that.

So I guess maybe I should work on being awesome too.

I did get a few things purged and definitely reorganized, so it doesn’t look like someone ransacked my pantry anymore. Just like with my cooking, momma does it better.

I sent this challenge to a few of my friends, to see if they would do it with me. Misery loves company right? Just kidding. Some were already doing other challenges but one told me she didn’t have enough stuff to get rid of 40 bags. I know I definitely don’t since I’ve been working on purging for months. But I’m looking at it a bit differently.

Through the first seven days I think I maybe have threw away one trash bag worth of stuff. That’s not much, but it’s one less bag of stuff I have in my house AND that means a few sections of my house are that much cleaner and well organized!

Plus this is helping to keep me motivated. I’ve noticed a serious drop in my energy lately so now I feel obligated to at least straighten, purge and clean one teeny tiny part of my house each day. Once I start moving around and doing stuff, it’s hard to stop so then I get a little more cleaning done than I planned!
